The River is One Spooky Ride.

Tuesday nights at 9 have become a lot more frightening on ABC. Oren Peli (Paranormal Activity) has brought the surveillance terror from the bedroom to the amazon river. Using the same camerawork techniques that made him well known on the big screen, he has catapulted the newest ABC mystery drama on to the top echelon of prime time shows. With the recent success of Paranormal Activity one, two, and three, why not mix it up and reproduce it? This time making it less exclusive to the cinema, and bringing it right into our television sets.

Crazy demons, possessed baby dolls, and deranged natives have given the team quite the scare in hopes of finding beloved TV show host Emmet Cole. Upon realizing the dangers of what hides in the Amazon brush, the rescue team has begun to realize that this expedition may not be worth risking their lives. But the bump in the night has surrounded them and forced them to stay in this treacherous domain. With every episode there comes a new threat, and a new clue to the disappearance of Cole.

Grade: B+ (87%)

Is Alcatraz Worth Watching?

Alcatraz has created a lot of buzz in the last month as the newest crime drama on the Fox network. But after seeing what Alcatraz has to offer, A question arises of whether or not my 9-10pm time slot on Monday night's is being wasted.

The first few episodes drew me in, and i thought for sure this would be my new favorite. But after the last 3 weeks there has been a lot of redundancy in the overall plot. It is getting to the point where the only things that change is the fashion in which innocent civilians die. The beginning is the easy determination of which inmate is on the loose, the middle is the missed opportunity to catch him, and the end is a toe to toe square off with the inmate. Ultimately the bad guy dies or gets locked up.

But hang on here, we still have no idea why these Alcatraz inmates are still alive and haven't aged a bit in fifty years. For that reason alone I will continue to watch this show, and hopefully find an originality that will dictate the future of this Fox series. It is not yet time to pull the plug on this superficial crime drama. But as for now the grade will remain worthy of average.

The Playboy Club- Alan Taylor

A legacy lives on in the newest NBC drama, The Playboy Club. Scandal fills the Chicago air, and right in the middle of it lives one man's dream. That one man being the narrator of this tale, and an American icon that was born in the 60's, Hugh Hefner. This story reveals the lives of the bunnies, and how they required their claim to fame. But it is not only their distinction that sparks interests, it is who they are that makes this television show special. Each bunnie has her own story to tell. Whether she came from an oppressive neighborhood, or is an activist fighting for what she believes in, or a lost soul searching for her dream, or is just trying to make ends meet, there are many stories to be told, and they all have a story worth telling. But the series not only focuses on the sweet and sassy bunnies, it also provides us with a historical landmark of American pop culture. A timeline through what was the biggest party in the country, and where the high rollers could go to forget the stress that reality released on a daily basis.

Starring in the show is the man everyone is talking about in the 1960 Chicago metropolitan. The womanizing lawyer with ties to the mob Nick Dalton has a certain swag that makes his presence immediately known upon entering The Playboy Club.  The character is played by Eddie Cibrian, who has made a living off day time television. In the pilot that aired this past Monday I recognized Cibrian as being the actor who stood out the most in part of his considerable equivalence to actor Jon Hamm (who plays a similar role in hit TV series Mad Men). And this observation is definitely a compliment. I don't know whether is was the 60's businessman appeal, or if it was the intelligence and confidence that attributes to his character. All I know is that Cibrian is exceptional.

His gorgeous accomplice bunnie Maureen is played by Amber Heard. She is the new cigarette vendor for the club and hasn't failed to make a good impression on any key holder yet. Her charm keeps every man close, and sometimes even too close. As the main character in the series she becomes a bunny easily favored by the audience. Maureen is a hard working girl that will stop at nothing to one day become an acclaimed singer. Her  beauty and innocence spark an interest in Dalton and it soon becomes a fire. But she won't give it up for anyone. In the recent premiere she ran into a lot of trouble with the wrong people. She will have to fight her way to the top and it will be by no means an easy task.

I do believe that this new series is worth the 60 minutes every Monday. From watching the pilot there are many directions that Taylor could bring the Playboy story. And it doesn't hurt to spend the night drooling over the dreamboats of the 60's dressed in bunny costumes.

The Playboy Legacy

New Girl- Elizabeth Meriwether

Coming to Fox on September 20th will be the new show starring Zoey Deschanel, New Girl. It will be airing it's first season on Tuesdays 9/8c. The 20 minute pilot is available on itunes for free.

Jess is an animated girl that loves to sing and think happy thoughts. Her cheery attitude and frequent daydreams about rainbows and puppies make her the innocent girl that you would feel bad to upset. But after a recent break up with her boyfriend she seems to fall more and more down a slippery slope. In search for a new apartment she runs into Nick, Schmidt, and Coach. And an unlikely crew is born under the same roof.

Each of these characters brings their own element to the table. Their differences are the cause for some interesting situations regarding love, friendship, responsibility, and the art of being a dousch bag. Well i think Schmidt can take that last one for himself. Making up this crew are a group of actors that have flown under the radar for the most part. Jake M. Johnson (Nick) has starred in recent movies such as Get Him to the Greek and No Strings Attached. Max Greenfield and Damon Wayans Jr. star as Schmidt and Coach. They are actors who have had small roles in recent television series, but do fit their parts quite well. Together these three make for a crew that holds a tough friendship. One that involves each of them putting another in line by constantly exposing their flaws, which usually results in a laugh out loud situation of humiliation. What seems to be a group of strangers under one roof turns into a lasting friendship that includes the emotional cartoon character from space, Jess.  

Jess (Zooey Deschanel) is the main attraction, and the mediator of the apartment. When the house gets a little too rowdy or douschy she is their to make everyone stop in their tracks and say, "What the hell are you doing?" And her answer will remain the same every time, "Im just being Jess". And then she will probably sing her little jingle and end it with her famous punchline, It's Jess!

Terra Nova- Craig Silverstein, Kelly Marcel

We all thought that John Hammond's idea of turning Dino land into a tourist attraction died in '93. Well it's back and better than ever. Hopefully this time Newman (Wayne Knight) won't be there to turn everything to shit. This time we are sent to the year 2149 where the world is on the brink of extinction through over population. The only way to cut down the number of civilians rationally is to send them through a time machine 85 million years in the past. With the advanced technology on their side it looks like the human race have overcome a guaranteed apocalypse, for now.

The show will follow a family's journey from devastation to rebirth in a prehistoric colony. Obviously living in the middle of the Jurassic period will be a struggle for any family, so this fresh start may turn a little rotten early. Jim Shannon (Jason O'Mara) plays the father and protector of the family that has been sent to Terra Nova. With him there are what i suppose to be his two daughters, teenage son, and wife. This ex cop patrols the colony from  internal criminal offenses and from the mystery that lies outside of the walls. But the stress of looking out for his wife and kids may be too much for him to handle. O'Mara will be relied on heavily throughout the story line and seen as one of the main leaders of Terra Nova. The citizens will confide in him and rely on his will to secure the safety of each individual that finds trouble behind the colony's walls.



The most impressive attribute for this new series is going to be the special effects. The landscape from the trailer is top notch, along with the dinosaur animations. And when a director needs help with a science fiction theme who do they turn to? Steven Spielberg! It is quite obvious to see his genius reflect the work in the trailer. And since the original air date was pushed back from summer to fall it is evident that the creators wanted to make sure everything went smoothly. Futuristic weaponry, souped up Humvees, and super soldiers plotted against prehistoric beasts is a perfect new theme for the science fiction genre on television right now. Falling Skies became a little boring after a while for it's lack of originality, but Terra Nova may be the next best thing that could put a good taste in my mouth. I felt like i have seen every possible futuristic outcome for man kind, except for this.

Terra Nova will being airing September 26th starting with a 2 hour premiere, and it will include 13 episodes.
