The Rise of the Planet of the Apes- (Rupert Wyatt) A Teetering Legacy

Opening in theaters August 5th the new Apes movie starring James Franco and Frieda Pinto will mark a moment in Hollywood history that could forever bury the Planet of the Apes saga. It all started in 1968 when a legend was born. A crew of astronauts crash land on Earth where they find nothing but hairy psychopaths that have taken over as the predators who have conquered the human race. Any humans that were spared were forced into a lifetime of slavery. Then in 2001 Tim Burton made a remake starring Mark Wahlberg and Tim Roth. A complete box office flop sent the Apes theme out the window for the last ten years, but now it is back. Literally going back to the beginning, which fills a void in the story for those who were a little lost come their first  encounter with the story in 2001. We all asked, how the hell did the human race let this happen? And maybe others shared my opinion of how it is highly unlikely that a bunch of hairy beasts could overtake armed forces who wield something a little stronger than giant gorilla fists, try nuclear bombs.

Usually remakes and sequels of a classic beat a dead horse, and preludes create another dimension of the tale that provides a chance to revive it. It offers more room for the director to work, and for more elements to arise. The prelude essentially works to increase complexity in the story where roots of the legacy is dug up and revealed. Whatever is dug up will provide us with a reference to the rest of the story. And with a long drawn out plot we stay interested by what is being connected. And the longer you have the attention of the audience, the more chance of the movie being coined a "Box office hit". For this prelude there is hope come August 5th. Wyatt has given us all the answers to how the legacy of the story was born. And i actually think this will be a fairly decent movie. But the sad thing with preludes is there is only one, unless your George Lucas and you decide to drag it on forever. With a major success of  Rise of the Planet of Apes, Wyatt will probably want to continue his production into the future. Which would take place after the original, as a squeal. And that's where things become a little difficult.
