Super 8- J.J. Abrams
Seeing this movie in IMAX was very enjoyable but not worth the 15 bucks. The very loud explosions and gun fire did make out to have a blockbuster feel but this movie was a lot more than that. The acting was very good and most of the characters are ten year old kids. Elle Fanning (sister of Dakota Fanning) made a breakthrough performance while her counter part Joel Courtney also comes up strong. I have heard that people think this is the E.T. of our generation but i don't know if these movies can be compared that closely. Movies that are driven by a group of kids on an adventure has seen a lot of success in the box office. The Goonies, Stand By Me, Sandlot, and E.T. are four of my favorites movies that would fall into this category, but they are old classics. Is super 8 on that level? maybe right now with 12.2 million coming in on opening day, but as far as 10 years down the road, i don't think so.
Even though this movie is probably not going to be a classic, did i enjoy it? Yes very much so. With a bunch of sequels and remakes coming out, its refreshing to see an original story line done by a veteran crew (Abrams, Spielberg). And since i am numb to the whole special effects thing maybe i would be the wrong person to ask about this movie. Before i went to see this movie i was expecting it to be heavy on science fiction and explosions. There was a fair share of it but it didn't overlook the individual story line of the characters. This movie could of been fine without the giant alien torturing a small town. But i guess it would leave the whole blockbuster genre and fail to rake in as much cash as they did. For me i was defiantly more interested in the acting and personal conflicts with the kids and fathers. And i feel like most people my age will feel the same way. Younger crowds will enjoy this movie because it is an alien movie and its PG13, and older crowds will enjoy it to because of the character interactions and dialogue. So this is the perfect summer movie for a mixed crowd.
Overall, Not one of my favorites, but worth my time and possibly worth another viewing when it comes out on DVD. Id give you a push to go see it, probably more of a nudge.
