Blue Valentine 2010- Derek Cianfrance
I have finnally made it home for the summer and left school alone for a while. This will definatley give me more down time to be a lazy ass and watch my shows and a few movies on the side. I began my summer with a romance film called Blue Valentine.
With Ryan Gosling being in it i knew that this is one romance i had to see. After all he is the guy that knows what to say at all times to make females fall head over vagina for him. With his last great performance with Rachel McAdams in The Notebook i had a feeling this one would be a little better. Probabley because he has grown up a little more and hopefully acquired better acting skills. Or maybe because i knew in this movie he wouldnt be overshadowed by the beautiful McAdams.
Michelle Williams stars in Blue Valentine and i can say that she pissed me off for most of the movie. This is probably because i grew up the teenage part of my life in a broken home where my mother fell out of love with my father. And all i want is to see relationships work, because most of the time they dont, and thats the unfortunate truth. Williams falls in love with Gosling and dad does everything he can to please her and be a good father. But there is nothing he can do to ease the constant stress mom is under. So she gives up on him.
At first i thought "You bitch". All females do is whine about how hard their life and how everything isn't how she thought it was going to turn out. Where is the castle, noble steed, and royal servants? I fully believe that women are always trying to live in a fantasy world and men are content with their friends, an attractive wife, maybe kids, and definalty a beer (maybe a shot, or bottle). And if the father tried everything in his power to please everyone then its all her fault.
My second thought was trying to see this in Williams light. Why is it that her life is so miserable? Then i thought its because of Gosling's drinking habits and how he is so satisfied with what he has. Do females really want a life that is constantly aiming for a forever changing lifestyle. Do we need to get off our ass and make that extra 20K a year to get that dream vacation to the Carribean? I guess Gosling was just too happy with what he had and not motivated enough to make his family's life something more, something different from what it has been for the last 15 years or so. And mom needs a new man with a house out in California and a passion for skydiving.
Overall this movie was very honest and thats what i love about movies like this. I thought it was going to be another Notebook fantasy but it wasnt. It was a juxtaposition of the beginning and the end. The beginning being where we fight so hard to be with someone we say we love and barely know. To the end where we fight to get away from the same person and struggle to erase all the memories we had with them.
